Three tips for managing anxiety

Some time back, I teamed up with Families Online to deliver a workshop about managing anxiety aimed at families of all ages. The workshop covered a few different ideas about how to cope with anxiety.

As you will see in the video, there are three great ways to manage anxiety.

Managing anxiety:

  1. You can manage practical worries using problem solving. Firstly, define the main problem you are stuck with. Then, you can think through all the solutions and their pros and cons, to choose the best option. You can then plan when to do this, have a go, and finally review how it went.
  2. You can manage hypothetical/future based worries which you cannot control, using a technique called worry time. Set aside 15-30 minutes each day to worry, at the same time (not before bed!). The rest of the day, write down any worries as they come up, and then carry on with the task you were already doing. How well you can control your worries will surprise you!
  3. You can face your fears and phobias by slowly exposing yourself to the object or situation that you fear. We call this graded exposure. It is advised to do this in a slow and graded way, so that you don’t feel overwhelmed.

Have a watch of the video here to understand these concepts more.
