Overcoming worries

Lucy* was a 17-year-old girl, in her final year of sixth form. She was experiencing lots of worries about her schoolwork, friendships and interviews for university next year.

Anjali taught Lucy how to classify her worries and manage them in different ways, re-evaluate the usefulness of worry and reduce Lucy's need for double checking and reassurance seeking.

By the time they finished their 12 sessions, Lucy was able to go out with her friends more easily, she had a place at her favourite university, and she was coping so much better. Before seeing Lucy off, they created a relapse prevention plan that detailed which techniques helped the most, and how Lucy could continue to stay well.

Lucy wrote Anjali a card for their final session, expressing how she was coping better and how she was excited to see what she could push herself to do in the future.

Overcoming panic attacks

We’re proud to have worked closely with Frontline19 during the Covid-19 pandemic. Frontline19 are an organisation set up to match frontline workers to therapists, based on their difficulties. The clients receive therapy very quickly (often within a few days) and the therapists provide their sessions to offer their support to those most in need during lockdown, all for free.

Bev came to Brighter Life Therapy via Frontline19 following panic attacks when putting on a mask for work. Bev feared that she would have a panic attack and the mask would suffocate her, so she was avoiding situations where she had to wear it. We made a goal for Bev to wear her mask for 1 hour by the end of treatment. Bev rated that her anxiety would be 7/10 if she wore a mask for 1 hour, and 10/10 if she wore it for two hours.

Bev had 10 sessions in total, and finally overcame her panic attacks which had been present for 10 years. Bev had never learnt about panic attacks before and realised she had picked up bad habits to control them that were actually making the anxiety and attacks worse. By session 9, Bev was able to wear her mask for two hours without thinking about it and rated her anxiety as only a 2-3/10 to do this. It was such an improvement from the 10/10 anxiety she predicted - both Bev and Anjali were chuffed!

Bev sent Anjali some flowers and a card (picture below) and a very kind email to say thank you.
